The kitchen essential that comes with a laundry list of health benefits. Lemons are a flavorful fruit with a crisp, clean scent, that can easily be integrated into your daily diet.

How to Buy: Fresh produce is always the most nutrient rich. The heavier the better when buying lemons. Make sure the lemons are a bright yellow, any green means that the lemon isn’t fully ripened.

Health Benefits: Lemon juice is antiseptic, antibacterial and antioxidant rich. Although acidic in taste, lemons are alkaline-forming in the body, making them beneficial in balancing a highly acidic condition in the body. Lemons are high in Vitamin C and potassium. Vitamin C helps boost your immune system and potassium is a key component to a healthy heart.

Looking for a liver detox? Add lemon juice to a glass of warm water in the morning. Drinking a glass of warm water with lemon first thing in the morning detoxes the liver and helps cleanse your bowels.

Skin: Lemon juice can also be applied topically for clearer, healthier skin. After washing your face in the morning, pat it with a little freshly squeezed lemon juice. The lemon juice will act as an exfoliant. Due to its Vitamin C content, lemon juice applied topically may also protect against sun damage.

How to Eat: Squeeze onto a salad or vegetables in place of a dressing to reduce your sodium and sugar intake. Drink fresh lemon juice in your water daily in the morning and evening for added flavor and to aid in digestion and liver detoxification. Finely grate lemon zest and use in cake batter or salad dressing.
