March Makeover: Day 8
Start your day with a 10 minute mediation this morning.
Start by sitting cross-legged either on your floor or on a pillow, with your hands softly resting on your knees. Gently close your eyes and focus on softening your body, starting with your hands, feet, neck and shoulders. Next, bring your awareness to your breath and concentrate on taking full, deep breaths. Let any thoughts that come into your mind just pass by, and bring yourself back to the present. The newer you are to meditation, the more likely it is that your mind will wander, but that’s ok! Remember that this is a practice, and the more often you sit, the easier it will be to return your focus to the present moment.
Relaxation is an undeniable component of a healthy lifestyle, and Harvard research has discovered that incorporating relaxation techniques (such as yoga + mediation) into your daily routine can actually activate “disease-fighting genes” that promote health and well-being. Meditation has also been proven to decrease stress, increase attention, focus and memory as well as boost mood and immune function.
Many yoga studios offer meditation classes, and if you’d like a more guided meditation in your own home there are a number of resources and recordings available. If you have an iPhone, you can also download the Mindfulness App, which has a number of guided meditations to help you get started and deepen your practice.
